MO'OLELO:
The legend behind the Naupaka tells the story of a beautiful Hawaiian princess named Naupaka. She lived high in the mountains, but one day decided to take a walk on the beach. While doing so she met a handsome fisherman named Kaui. When they laid eyes on eachother, it was love at first sight. Knowing that she was a high princess and kaui a lowly fisherman, they could never be together. They ventured to wise Kapunas, and high priestesses but all refused their blessing as it was kapu (forbidden) for them to marry. Knowing that they must part, Naupaka tore the flower she wore behind her ear in two, and gave half to Kaui as a remembrance of their love before she returned to the mountains. To this day the Naupaka flower grows as half a flower, one by the ocean and one in the mountains.
